Celebrating Devon’s Culture

Devon’s libraries, arts, music, food, sport, heritage, leisure and lifelong learning activities and its environmental attractions all contribute to the high quality of life in Devon. They also play a role in defining the distinct and vibrant character of Devon. We want everyone to enjoy and contribute to our rich and diverse cultural life.

How Devon is now

  • Devon’s rich and varied natural environment and outstanding cultural heritage contribute to the high quality of life enjoyed by Devon residents and are a major attraction for visitors to Devon
  • Spread across the county there are countless schools, clubs, pubs, societies and community groups which encourage participation in a wide range of cultural activities
  • The Government’s adult learning agenda is placing increasing priority on job-related education and training, meaning that less funding will be available for leisure learning activities
  • Devon’s communities have benefited from more than £21.5 million of investment from the Heritage Lottery Fund over the past 10 years
  • 90% of residents think libraries are important to their quality of life and 44% visit a library at least once a month
  • Fewer than 40% of residents see Devon as a good place for artistic and cultural activities and a significant majority think the County Council should do more to support Devon’s cultural life if funds are available

Our objectives

  • Encourage cultural organisations in Devon to work together to offer better cultural experiences which celebrate diversity and help to promote strong and inclusive communities
  • Improve opportunities for people of all ages to explore and develop their own creative potential and learn from their cultural experiences
  • Enhance Devon’s reputation as home for high quality cultural experiences and enterprises
  • Promote Devon’s cultural life in order to strengthen the local economy

Making Devon Greener

  • Reduce the need for people to travel so far to enjoy cultural experiences
  • Improve access to cultural attractions and events for non-car users
  • Help cultural organisations to reduce and recycle waste
  • Promote cultural activities as a way of raising awareness of environmental issues
