Press Releases

From Sian Hester, Exeter 383523, October 07,2008

One of the musical highlights of this year's Two Moors Festival takes place in Tavistock on Sunday October 12 with the support of Devon County Council.

The singers, Dame Felicity Lott and Dame Ann Murray, are appearing together at a celebrity recital in Tavistock Parish Church starting at 7.30 pm. With the pianist Graham Johnson they will be performing songs and duets by Schubert, Brahms, Mendelssohn and other composers.

Since its creation in the aftermath of the 2001 Foot and Mouth outbreak, the Two Moors Festival has built up a national reputation for bringing quality musical performances to the heart of rural communities each October, particularly in north and west Devon and on Exmoor.

In previous years, the County Council, as part of its commitment to celebrating Devon's culture, has sponsored performances such as the world premiere of the new opera, Tarka the Otter. Performed in Great Torrington in the heart of Tarka Country, this opera gave local schoolchildren the chance to appear alongside national opera stars and went on to win a national music award.

Councillor Sheila Hobden, Executive Member for Culture, said: "The Two Moors Festival gives wonderful opportunities for people in Devon to hear music of a very high quality without having to travel long distances. The focus it places on putting on concerts in towns in rural Devon means the Festival's music is heard in the heart of the county".

This year the County Council is bringing the Two Moors Festival to Tavistock in what is set to be another memorable Festival performance.

Cllr Roy Connelly, County Councillor for Tavistock, said: "I am delighted that, through the sponsorship of the County Council, Tavistock residents and visitors to the town will have the opportunity to hear this celebrity recital. Tavistock has much to offer in the way of cultural experiences and hosting this Two Moors Festival event is set to be one of the highlights of the year".

The Two Moors Festival runs from October 9 to 19 with 27 performances in Exeter and nine other towns and villages in Devon and on Exmoor. Further details can be found at www.thetwomoorsfestival.com
