SCHOOLS across Tiverton are joining together to stage a week-long festival for families.

A series of events will be staged at schools throughout the town for children and their parents, grandparents and other carers to enjoy together.

There will be workshops on dinosaurs, space exploration, recycled glass painting, Forest Schools, making pottery, photography, various cookery demonstrations, music-making and guided walks.

It will all culminate on Sunday, October 26 when many of the week's individual activities will be repeated at the Sunningmead Community Centre when there will be a free Family Festival Day.

Tiverton schools are getting together to put on the ambitious event to coincide with the national Family Learning Week. Two previous festivals have been extremely popular with children and their families.

The primary schools will be linking up with Tiverton High School to stage the event.

The High School will be staging a number of events including a performance of songs written by schools in the Tiverton Learning Community over the summer term.

There will also be a workshop at the High School for Year 7 parents to help their child achieve in maths and portrait photography and textiles workshops.

Di Carr, headteacher at St John's Catholic Primary, who has helped to organise the week said: "Schools are very different today from when many parents and grandparents went to school.

"We want to offer them some fun, imaginative ways for them to learn with their children.

"We also want them to see how children learn now and what we do in school during the day.

"We have had a lot of support from local organisations like the county and district councils, the health trust and the fire service and this will be a real community event."

A brochure giving details of all the events during the Family Festival week is available from schools, the library and museum and other locations throughout the town.

The week's events begin on Monday, October 20 and run through until Sunday, October 26.

Tiverton county councillors Des Hannon and Mary Turner have contributed £1,000 towards the festival from their county council locality budgets.

Tiverton East councillor Des Hannon said: "The family festival is fast becoming a highlight of Tiverton's calendar with lots of kids and parents having fun and learning at the same time.

"I'm delighted to be able to help make it happen. Long may it continue."

Tiverton West councillor Mary Turner said: "It is a pleasure to be a small part of this festival of fun. I hope it is a great success."
