Press Releases

From Pam Newby, Exeter 383262, October 09,2008

Honiton mobile library assistant Mike Pearce has been making good use of his time travelling around East Devon delivering books to rural communities.

Mike is an enthusiastic amateur photographer and often takes his camera with him while providing the vital library outreach service on behalf of Devon County Council.

He now has a collection of images and has put together an exhibition entitled 'From My Point of View' which is to be displayed in Honiton Library from October 20th to November 1st.

Mike explained: "Working on the Honiton mobile library has given me the opportunity to slowly build up a collection of images of East Devon. Coupled with photographs taken on my travels around the rest of Devon I am creating a portfolio of work based on the four seasons of this beautiful county of ours.

I first started taking photographs when I was about eight years old and was given a 'hand me down' Polaroid. I have since used various cameras from a simple 110 to a complicated 35mm. At 16 I joined the local drama club to act on stage. I soon discovered this wasn't really for me so I went on to design and construct stage sets. Working for both amateur and semi-pro companies, I would often take the camera with me but most of the time I was so busy that it stayed in the bag.

"Whilst working on a recent stage production I saw nothing but images, light, shadows, contrast and colour and I realised that my passion for photography was not dead but just dormant.

I inherited a digital camera and have since updated to a newer digital SLR, which brings me back full circle to when I was 16. I have now enrolled on a City and Guilds Photography course which could lead on to a degree, which is my goal."

Honiton Library manager Jenny Wood is delighted to offer Mike a showcase for his work.

"I am so pleased to have such talented members of staff who are willing to share their skills with others," she said.
