RELEASE ON BEHALF OF THE EXE ESTUARY MANAGEMENT PARTNERSHIP

VOLUNTEERS are being asked to get involved with habitat management at Dawlish Warren on Wednesday 10 September.

The Exe Estuary Management Partnership is working with Teignbridge District Council Rangers to offer volunteers the opportunity to help with the management of the main pond on the reserve, clearing reeds, small trees and other 'invasive' plants between 10am and 3.30pm to maintain the wildlife value of the pond. Added to the fun of the task it can be a great way to get close up views of dragonflies, damselflies and perhaps even a visiting Kingfisher.

Dawlish Warren is a highly designated National Nature Reserve due to its importance as a bird roosting site for waders that use the estuary, its vulnerable sand dunes and dune grassland, as well as the amount of different species that it supports.

The day is part of a series of volunteer opportunities being organised by the Exe Estuary Management Partnership.

Councillor Margaret Rogers, Chairman of the Exe Estuary Management Partnership and Devon County Council Executive Member for Environment, said: "We are extremely grateful for the support of volunteers who have helped with other projects along the Exe Estuary and we hope that even more people are willing to get involved with this event. It gives local communities the opportunity to be part of the practical management of the estuary and to enjoy the beautiful surroundings while being active and making new friends."

Jenny Lockett, Exe Estuary Officer said: "Full instruction of the task will be given as well as a safety brief. All necessary tools and protective clothing will be provided as well as a light lunch".
