Monday (6 October) sees the launch of a new Devon wide campaign to encourage carers to register with Devon Carers Link.
The campaign, which will run until the end of the year, will feature adverts on radio, billboards, bus shelters and buses and postcards in GP surgeries, libraries and council receptions across the county. They will cover some of the common scenarios that carers experience and will target carers of all ages and situations.
"We estimate there are around 72,000 informal carers in the county" said Councillor Sally Morgan, Devon County Council's Carers Lead. "But only around 6,000 are registered with Devon Carers Link.
"Many people do not recognise themselves as carers and we want this campaign to reach those carers and make sure they are receiving all the practical and financial help that is available."
By registering with Devon Carers Link carers have access to a range of support including a countywide Take A Break scheme, that makes it easier for carers to have short breaks from their caring role. Flexible Breaks grants are also available for carers to spend on having some proper time off.
Last year £400,000 was spent in providing carers short breaks, and around £100,000 was given in flexible grants.
A carer is anyone who is caring for someone else - this can be a partner, a parent, a relative, a disabled young person, or even a close friend or neighbour. Young carers, those who might be caring for a parent, will also be encouraged to register. In Devon it is estimated that 14,000 people provide over 50 hours of care per week, saving the local economy £1.1 billion per year.
There is a lot of help available for carers once they have registered" said Matthew Byrne, Manager of Devon Carers Link. "In the past we have helped carers, through our flexible grant scheme, to go on holiday, pursuit hobbies and stay in touch with relatives and friends".
Carers can register online at www.devon.gov.uk/devoncares or by calling 0845 155 1016. All carers will receive a carer's pack containing information about financial help and practical help as well as useful contact telephone numbers and websites. A carer's pack for young people has also been produced.
