Press Releases
From David Hutchings, Exeter 382594, October 10, 2008
THOUSANDS of pupils across Devon dropped everything and read for 15 minutes today (Fri) in a special initiative to celebrate the enjoyment of reading.
Drop Everything And Read or DEAR Day was staged as part of Devon Gets Reading, the county's campaign to promote the National Year of Reading.
Children and young people in more than 130 schools and children's centres dropped everything and read for pleasure during a selected 15-minute period.
Devon Gets Reading coordinator Roger Kirk said: "We asked all primary, secondary and special schools, Children's Centres and Pupil Referral Units to stage at least 15 minutes of reading when every child and adult in the school read.
"They could choose silent reading, paired reading or joint reading aloud. It could be stories, poems, newspapers or magazines - reading was interpreted as widely as possible.
"We believe this was a fun way to highlight Devon Gets Reading and promote reading for enjoyment. Pupils and students knew that their counterparts across the county were all doing the same.
"We asked for a simple return on what young people decided to read, gathered by age and gender, which we will collate and publish countywide to record what Devon's young people enjoy reading."
Below is a list of the schools which registered to take part in DEAR Day.
