PUPILS AND STAFF at an Exeter primary school are re-launching their library next week with visits by a range of sporting stars who are going to read to the children.

Clyst Heath Nursery and Community Primary School had to use its library as a classroom last year while a £1.1 million extension was being built.

The popular primary school needed the extension to cope with its growing number of pupils.

The extension was opened last term and now the school is re-launching its library with a series of special events.

On Thursday (Oct 9) Neil Saunders from Exeter City FC, Torquay United captain Chris Hargreaves and three rugby stars from Exeter Chiefs will visit the school from 2.15pm to 2.35pm to read to the children.

Their sessions will follow a ribbon cutting at 2pm by Christine McFarlane of Devon County Council's Schools Library Service who has helped the school with the library re-launch and set up a Junior Librarian scheme where pupils are trained as librarians.

The school will also be staging a book fair throughout the day.

On Friday (Oct 10) pupils and staff will be taking part in the Devon DEAR Day when schools will be 'dropping everything and reading' for 15 minutes.

Staff and children will be paying £1 each to dress up as their favourite book character and there will be an assembly at 9.30am at which teachers and teaching assistants will talk about their favourite children's book.

The School Council has asked for all the money raised to go to the charity Book Aid International which supports reading in developing countries.

Less than 18 months after it opened in 2005, Clyst Heath was visited by education inspectors from Ofsted who judged that every aspect of school life was good with some outstanding features.

They said parents were "unstinting" in their praise for the new school while pupils felt safe and happy and really enjoyed coming to school.

Assistant headteacher Jeremy Davy said: "We are delighted that members of the sporting community have given up their time to support our library opening at Clyst Heath.

"This will be an exciting and memorable event for the children. We hope it will reinforce the importance of reading for all - and the fun that is to be found in a good book."

NOTE TO NEWS EDS: Reporters and photographers are welcome to attend the events during the week. For more information contact assistant headteacher Jeremy Davy on 01392 361415.
