Press Releases

From David Hutchings, Exeter 382594, November 27,2008

A NORTH DEVON village school which provides 'the best possible education' has been praised by inspectors for making lessons fun and achieving above average standards.

The school standards agency Ofsted says every aspect of life at Chittlehampton Church of England Primary is good and the school is set to get even better.

And a separate report on Chittlehampton by the Diocese of Exeter accords with the Ofsted inspectors' findings and judges all the work of the school as good or better.

Ofsted inspector Stephen Dennett visited the school last month and his report has just been published.

He concludes: "This is a good school which provides a broad and effective education for its pupils.

"A number of improvements have been made since the last inspection and the school is moving forward well."

One parent told Mr Dennett: "Teaching standards are very high and I feel confident as a parent that my child is receiving the best possible education."

Mr Dennett says children get off to a flying start when they begin school and enjoy good teaching throughout.

They start school with a wide range of abilities but, by the time they leave at 11, they are reaching above average standards in English, maths and science.

"The pupils enjoy school. They say lessons are fun and they enjoy the challenges set for them," he says.

"Good behaviour, secure relationships and self-confident pupils are all evident in this lively school.

"The curriculum is lively and imaginative. A wide range of visits and visitors enhance pupils' learning experiences and add to their enjoyment of learning.

"Pupils have good relationships with their teachers who interact with them well."

Mr Dennett says the children are well cared for and they have a good knowledge of how to stay safe and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

"The key to the school's success is the strong and dedicated teamwork of the staff and governors which supports the good leadership and direction provided by the head," he says.

"Strong relationships between the head, staff and governors, together with a firm commitment to ensuring pupils continue to enjoy school and show real enthusiasm for learning, are key principles.

The only area he cites for improvement is the outdoor play area to give pupils more chance to develop their physical and imaginative skills.

Diocesan inspector Andrew Rickett concludes his report by praising headteacher Jayne Kyle.

"The headteacher has ensured the school has made very commendable progress since the previous inspection," he says. Every aspect of school life is now good.

Today Jayne Kyle said: "Chittlehampton is a lovely school where everyone works together to provide a happy environment in which to learn.

"It is great that Ofsted and the Diocese recognise our strengths."
