NEARLY four in five Devon parents applied for a secondary school place for their child on-line this year.
The deadline has now passed for secondary school applications for September 2009 and 78.3 per cent of families applied electronically - that's over 6,000 people.
Applications have now opened for families who want to apply for a primary school place for their child in either September 2009 or January 2010.
The closing date for submissions is January 23, 2009 and applications can be submitted online at www.devon.gov.uk/admissionsonline
Places will be offered by letter, posted second class on April 17, or by e-mail sent on the morning of April 17.
Last year 68 per cent of secondary applications and 77 per cent of primary applications were made electronically.
The opening of the primary on-line service is timed to coincide with the publication of The First Step booklet which gives families information and advice about choosing a primary school.
The booklet is being made available to parents across the county on the Devon County Council website www.devon.gov.uk/admissionsonline It are also available in hard copy which contains all the relevant forms to apply for a place if the parent chooses not to apply on-line.
But, by logging on, parents and carers will be able to apply for a place at one of Devon's 320 primary schools electronically.
They will also be able to obtain information on the schools themselves, the admission rules and the whole admission process.
The on-line system is available for primary applications, 24 hours a day, seven days a week until the closing date on January 23, 2009.
Devon's Executive Councillor for Children's Services, John Smith, said: "Online admissions is a convenient and time saving method of applying for a school place.
"Although parents may still apply in writing on the admissions application form, there are many benefits to applying online."
Mr Smith said the benefits for parents and carers meant:
A quicker and easier way of completing their applications
The ability to amend the application right up to the deadline date
No risk the application will get lost
No need to rush back to hand forms in at the school or to Devon County Council
Immediate online notification when allocations are made
