Devon Documents

Devon Documents

Devon Documents marks the contribution to Devon studies of Mrs Margery Rowe as Devon County Archivist.  It provides a series of insights into the county's past with 49 contributions by archivists and historians on a wide range of themes including travel, maritime, garden and ecclesiastical history.  The contributors have chosen a document of personal interest; each one is edited with an introduction which places it within its context and shows the historical significance.  The documents have been drawn from archives in Devon and others across the country.

Devon Documents is the first book of its kind and is an opportunity for non-specialists to become acquainted with characteristic work by leading scholars of the county's history.  The mixture of subjects is both lively and informative and will appeal to all those who have an interest in Devon.

The cover is a detail of Cullompton taken from a map made by Mark Pierce of the lands of Sir William Courten in 1633.  It is used by permission of the Somerset Record Office.
