LINX programme - for 12 -18 year olds

Adva is working in partnership with the Hampton Trust (Hampshire) to provide a specialist support service for young people aged 12 – 18 years who are displaying violent behaviour or who are having problems engaging with others and forming positive relationships.

What is the LINX Programme?

The LINX programme is a group work programme that is run over 12 weeks for 1-2 hours a week. It was developed by The Hampton Trust, a charity that works to break the cycle of domestic violence and has been brought into Devon in partnership with the Youth Offending Team and adva.

It is for young people aged 12-18 who have escalating violent behaviour and or have problems engaging with others and forming positive relationships. Often these young people may have come from a backdrop of domestic violence.

The group work is not based on literacy skills but participation and we use activities as a tool to stimulate discussion around issues to do with power, control and equality.

The aim of the programme is to build empathy and positive communication skills and ultimately challenge what behaviour occurs when in a group. The groups can have up to 10 people and are delivered in single sex groups. The course is delivered free of charge.

Who facilitates the groups?

Professionals from across agencies are trained in delivering the LINX programme, from the Youth Offending Service, Youth Service, Devon Action, parent support workers, teachers and  domestic violence workers to name a few. All groups are delivered with at least two co-facilitators.

Training of professionals will continue throughout Devon in 2010 and is free. If you are interested in becoming a facilitator, please contact the LINX Co-ordinator.

How do you refer?

Referrals come through agencies that work with young people via a referral form. The priority group is for those that are engaged with the Youth Offending teams (YOT) but we also work within mainstream schools, complementary education settings, youth centres and so on. The focus of the work changes depending on the needs of the group.

By the summer of 2010 a rolling programme for multi-agency referrals will be launched alongside those that are already happening within Schools and at YOT.
