Governance of Schools
In Devon, the functions of the Governor Support Team have been commissioned from Babcock LDP and it is their role to provide support, advice, information and training for governors, headteachers and clerks. Their web pages can be found at www.devonldp.org/governors.
Governing bodies are established in law to set the strategic direction of the school, monitor and evaluate the progress of schools in achieving their aims and objectives, and to provide support and challenge to the school. All state funded schools, whether maintained by the Local Authority, Academies, Trust Schools, and schools with a religious character are required by law to have a governing body.
School governors come from all walks of life and are the largest volunteer force in the country. Becoming a school governor can be very rewarding. You can find out more about this valuable role by visiting the Department for Education (DfE) website and the School Governor's One Stop Shop (SGOSS). If you would like to be considered as a governor of a school please email ldp-governorsservice@babcock.co.uk.
