Changing the way we deliver services
Changing the way we provide services - the next steps
The needs of Devon's ageing population presents us with a major challenge in terms of how we plan and deliver services which meet their needs. We have therefore embarked upon a process of discussing this challenge with focus groups representing a cross-section of people who use social care services, people who provide them and other interested parties. For example, representatives from voluntary organisations, care providers, Senior Council for Devon, Local Involvement Networks (LINks) and Patient Advisory Liaison Service (PALS)
Three such groups, one for each of our localities: Northern, Southern and Eastern Devon.have met. Discussions were frank and open and took into account the full range of factors affecting our services, including national and local demographic changes, research findings, all types of services available now and for the future, where services are currently located, patterns of provision and service costs.
You can download an information pack
(4.16MB - pdf help) which has been developed to give the participants as much information as possible to help them have a full say in our complex planning process. We are using their feedback to formulate an outline of the balance of services that will need to be commissioned over the next 20 years.
Ten volunteers came forward to form a county group working on even more in-depth planning .

Our engagement process will continue with the county wide group assisting us in developing and reviewing our outline requirements for service. The next step, planned for the summer , will be to approach relevant care service providers and identify how the market can respond to our outlined requirements. Once we have this knowledge we can form specific and detailed proposals for future services. Public consultation on these details will take place during the winter of 2009, before any final proposals are agreed.
