Role and Reponsibilites of SENCO

Role of SENCO

The SENCO is one of the people in the school, nursery or other early years setting, including childminder networks, appointed for this post. The SENCO is responsible for ensuring the following with regard to any children with special needs in their setting:

  1. Seeing that all children with special needs are being helped appropriately, ensuring liaison with parents and other professionals.
  2. Talking to and advising any member of staff who is concerned about a child.
  3. Co-ordinating provision for children with special needs.
  4. Making sure all written records are completed and appropriate Individual Education Plans are in place.
  5. Ensuring relevant background information about individual children is collected, recorded and up-dated.
  6. Act in a professional and ethical manner with due regard to confidentiality, data protection and human rights.
  7. Contacting the relevant Area SENCO at the earliest possible stage where there is a concern.

All children in the setting including those with special needs and/or a disability are the responsibility of the whole team, i.e. staff, senior managers and management.
