11.000. LIBRARIES : INTRODUCTION
There are several types of library containing local studies information. Normally the public library (1.100) will be the first resort, but important collections can also be found in educational libraries (1.200) and non-public libraries, some of which may not be open to the general public.

11.100. PUBLIC LIBRARY SERVICES

The public library service in Devon is adminstered by three authorities. For local studies the largest county collection is the Westcountry Studies Library in Exeter (1.110). ACLAND PAPERS Papers relating to Sir Richard Acland and Common Wealth, by Hugh Lawson. At present access is only obtainable through Dr J Melling, Department of Economic and Social History. Deposited 1993.

FRANCES BELLERBY COLLECTION A small collection of autograph letters and poems, 1973-75.

BETJEMAN COLLECTION The working Library of the Poet Laureate Sir John Betjeman. Located in the Old Library in closed stacks. Material from the collection can be consulted upon application to the Old Library Issue Desk. More than 4,000 printed books and pamphlets from the 18th to the 20th century. Subjects include English poetry, especially of the 19th century, the English parish church, 19th and 20th century architecture, and English topography, including many fine quartos and folios. Many of the books have notes and annotations, including poems, by Betjeman, and some contain autograph letters. The Collection is being catalogued and entries appear in the University Library Catalogue. A file of transcriptions of the many notes and insertions in the books is maintained and can be inspected upon application in the Old Library.

R.D. BLACKMORE Miscellaneous papers and proofs of the lesser works of Richard Doddridge Blackmore (1825-1900), both published and unpublished, and including Cradock Nowell, Dariel and Our Barge. There is also the manuscript preface to the 1892 edition of Lorna Doone. In addition, there are notebooks, etc, related to Blackmore's teaching career, and other literary fragments. Acquired 1958. CHARLES CAUSLEY The Library houses a complete collection of Causley's manuscripts, generously donated by the author. A finding list is available though as yet the Collection is not fully catalogued.

AGATHA CHRISTIE A collection of several thousand letters in 13 boxes, deposited in August 1992 by her literary agents Hugh Massie & Company. The correspondence is mainly about business matters, but not exclusively so, and contains many letters of Agatha Christie (Agatha Mallowan, Lady Agatha Mallowan, Dame Agatha Mallowan) and her husband Professor Sir Max Mallowan. There are also many fan letters. The period covered is 1938 to 1976 (the year of Agatha Christie's death). This collection may be consulted only after written permission has been obtained from the Librarian or Deputy Librarian. No photocopying is allowed.

JACK CLEMO Note-books, drafts, etc. of poems by the late Cornish poet Jack Clemo. There are also a number of books from his library.

CREDITON PARISH LIBRARY The books in the collection number 2473, and date from 1496. They include a good number of philosophical and religious works by British and European authors, Catholic as well as Protestant, many from British, foreign and classical literatures, books on geography, history and the sciences, etc. The collection possesses several hundred pamphlets, mainly from the 17th and 18th centuries. All the books and pamphlets are on permanent loan to the University Library. The manuscripts belonging to the Crediton Parish Library are now in the archives of the Devon Record Office in Exeter. The transfer from Crediton Parish Church took place in 1968, except for a very few books kept there for exhibition purposes. Apart from a few especially valuable books which are kept in the Strong Room, the collection is housed in the Rolling Stack.

LOIS DEACON - HARDY COLLECTION A collection of books, notes, etc by and about Thomas Hardy. Stored in the Rolling Stack.

DODDERIDGE COLLECTION The Dodderidge Collection consists mainly of pre-1700 books and was the property of the Corporation of Barnstaple. In 1957 the collection was transferred to Exeter on permanent loan to the University Library. There are many books on British, foreign and classical literatures and on geography, history, the sciences, etc. The collection numbers 354 works, including a few incunabula.

DAVID EDMUND COLLECTION Local, particularly Devon, history. Located in the Old Library in closed stacks. Material from the Collection can be consulted upon application to the Old Library Issue Desk. The Collection of about 4000 items consists of books, journals and pamphlets mainly concerned with local history, particularly of Devon and the other West Country counties. Quite a lot of the pamphlet material is of an "ephemeral" nature, but of considerable potential interest to historians of all persuasions.

ERRATICS CRICKET CLUB Two boxes of papers, including the old score-books, of Exeter University Erratics.

EXETER LAW SOCIETY A collection of rare law books deposited in the Library in December 1990. They are the property of the Exeter Law Society but may be consulted by University readers. Kept in the Rolling Stack.

EXETER UNIVERSITY Runs of various University publications, including the Gazette, Annual Reports, etc are kept in the Rolling Stack.

W.F. JACKSON KNIGHT/WILSON KNIGHT Manuscripts, notebooks and letters of the well-known classical scholar and former Reader in the University of Exeter. Also papers of his brother, the Shakespearian scholar Wilson Knight.

M. LITTLEWOOD Manuscript translation of Johann Joachim Quantz, Versuch einer Anweisung die Flöte Traversiere zu Spielen...1789, by Miss Marjorie Ackland of Bideford, Devon.
A manuscript account of life at Ford Manor, a school for music and physical training on the Devon-Somerset border, during the period between the First and Second World Wars. (12 large foolscap notebooks)

SIR NORMAN LOCKYER PAPERS Manuscripts by or relating to Sir Norman Lockyer, astronomer. These include notebooks on eclipses, scrapbooks about ballooning, 1907-09, and other scientific notebooks. There is also an extensive collection of correspondence previously kept at the Norman Lockyer Observatory, Sidmouth, and now deposited in the University Library.

MANUSCRIPTS A miscellaneous collection of single manuscripts, including autograph letters from a variety of people, including Charles Kingsley.

MAPS A collections of antiquarian maps, many of them of Devon and Cornwall. See separate hand-list of the Constable Collection for details. Entries for all items are listed on the computer catalogue.

OFFICIAL PUBLICATIONS The University Library possesses a good collection of British Government Publications, including a set of British Parliamentary Sessional Papers in the original from 1820-1854, and from 1950 onwards. A full set of Parliamentary Sessional Papers from 1731 onwards is on microprint and microfiche. The Library also takes a great many publications issued by the Public Record Office, Historical Manuscripts Commission, and General Register Office and Government Social Survey (now Office of Population Censuses and Surveys). They include Hansard's Parliamentary Debates, House of Lords and House of Commons Journals, Public General Acts, and Census Reports.

OTTERY ST MARY COLLECTION A parish library of 112 old books, deposited at the University a few years ago. Entries appear in the computer catalogue. The books are kept in the Rolling Stack.

PLAYBILLS Several hundred playbills of the Theatre Royal, Exeter, 1890-1955.

A. L. ROWSE The papers of the late Dr. Rowse were deposited at the University Library during 1995. This very large collection contains manuscripts of most of his works, extensive correspondence, diaries, press-cuttings and much else. It is not at present available for consultation.

SYON ABBEY COLLECTION A collection of 1186 pre-1850 books, the property of Syon Abbey. The collection was deposited in the University Library in September 1990. There is much rare material relating to the Bridgettines. The books are on the computer catalogue and are kept in the Special Collections Reading Room in the Old Library.

ROYAL WESTERN COUNTIES INSTITUTION The large collection of medical records generated by the psychiatric hospital at Starcross was deposited in the University Library in 1997. It covers young people suffering from mental illness and learning difficulties from 1875 to the 1970s. A grant has been received to provide a finding aid to the collection.

TOTNES LIBRARY This parish library came to the University Library on permanent loan in 1967, though some items remain in the local museum at Totnes. There are 304 volumes, mainly pre-1700, and entries to them appear on the computer catalogue. Kept in the Rolling Stack.

FERRIS TOZER Music manuscripts of works composed by Dr Ferris Tozer, one-time organist at St Davids Church, Exeter. The collection also contains printed versions. Kept in the Rolling Stack.

JAN MILLS WHITHAM An almost complete set of manuscripts of the published and unpublished works of the West Country author Jan Mills Whitham (1883-1956), who was regarded by some as a possible successor to Thomas Hardy. On its shelves the Library possesses an almost complete set of the published works, which was also part of the same gift. There are copies of his letters between 1928 and 1942, biographical notes in his hand and some press opinions.

HENRY WILLIAMSON Manuscripts, typescripts, proofs, of all his works. There are also a number of printed editions presented by the Henry Williamson Society.

Until 2001 the University of Exeter assumed administrative responsibility for the Cathedral Library. The 25,000 printed books are housed in the Bishop's Palace. The archives have been concentrated in the Old Cathedral Library, and are administered by the Devon Record Office. The Cathedral Library was founded by the first Bishop of Exeter, Leofric, in the 11th century, and still possesses the Exeter Book (c.960), the largest single collection of Anglo-Saxon poems extant, given by Leofric c.1072, which is on display to the public, as is the Exon Domesday manuscript (1086), the final draft of Domesday returns for the South Western counties. The Library also contains other manuscripts and printed books of the medieval and later periods, including numerous 17th and 18th century pamphlets and a large collection of early medical and scientific works. There is a useful collection of 19th and 20th century books on a wide range of subjects, including theology, biblical criticism, liturgy, church history, general and local history. Books which are in the Cathedral Library are listed on the University computer catalogue. Local items are also included in the Devon Union List.

Aims to conserve for public benefit the photographic heritage and other images relating to the historic environment of Totnes and its surrounding area, initially the photographic archive of Fay & Nicholas Horne, Barrington Weekes and Torquil MacLeod, and to encourage the deposit of other archives. It also aims to provide secure storage and promote the educational use of the image bank and to make it available through networks. The Image Bank intends to collaborate with the custodians of collections in Totnes Elizabethan Museum, Devon Record Office, Dartingtom Rural Archive and the National Monuments Record. It holds over 6,000 negatives and several hundred prints (2002). It is a registered charity.

Wren Trust is a community folk arts project working throughout Devon, & the counties of the South West, stimulating appreciation of & active participation in folk music & its related disciplines It does this by delivering a programme of workshops, performances & community projects, working with all ages in a range of educational, community & institutional settings as well as conventional arts & folk venues. 19.000. STUDY AND RESEARCH
There are various means of studying local history. Programmes for evening classes are normally issued in September and enrolment takes place in larger libraries and other centres. The Devon History Society inserts a programme of events organised by local history groups in each issue of the "Devon Historian". Occasional lectures and exhibitions are advertised in the local press or on the notice boards of museums and libraries.
