Devon County Flower - the Primrose

The Primrose Action Plan

primrose logoWild primroses bring springtime colour and beauty to the Devon countryside. They adorn our hedgebanks and roadside verges, carpet our woodlands and decorate our clifftops. The widespread abundance of this species helps to shape the character and special quality of the County. But this situation should not be taken for granted.

The Devon Primrose Action Plan image - PDF icon (290KB - pdf help) is an initiative that aims to raise public awareness of the need to value and conserve commonplace and characteristic elements of Devon's environment. It stems from the Devon Biodiversity Action Plan , which focuses conservation attention towards a series of priority habitats and species. These web pages provide background to the work that has been led by Devon County Council over the last three years to highlight the importance of wild primroses and other commonplace forms of wildlife.

primroseCentral to this work has been the Devon Primrose Survey. (Devon County Council are no longer promoting the Primrose Survey, so please don't send any survey forms to us.) This project, which started in East Devon in 2000 and spread Countywide in 2002, has helped to document the status of wild primroses across Devon and will provide a valuable tool for monitoring changes in our environment. It also provided an opportunity for many hundreds of people to get involved in a conservation initiative in their local area. It is hoped that this project and these web pages might inspire further interest in the conservation of Devon's wonderful wildlife.
