Colourful new information panels have recently been installed by Devon County Council along the Exeter to Turf Locks section of the Exe Estuary Trail, part of the new cycle route which is currently being developed around the entire Exe Estuary.

The new boards give details of where people are able to walk and cycle and have an attractive map that shows distances to nearby facilities and river crossing points.

They also contain information about the landscape and local history of the area and explain to readers how they can make a difference by living a greener lifestyle.

All the information is introduced by the Estuary's newest resident - Avril the Avocet; a cartoon character depicted in amusing situations such as windsurfing, recycling her bottles and driving a train. 

"The boards are designed to be fun, colourful and inspiring and also give people the information they need to have a great day out, on foot or bicycle, around this stunning Exe Estuary," said Devon County Council's Interpretation Project Manager, Sarah Holder. 

"The first five panels have recently been installed in partnership with Exeter City Council and we hope local people and visitors alike, enjoy them and find them useful."

Eight more panels are to be installed at locations around the Estuary in the New Year.

Devon County Council's Executive Member for Environment, Cllr Margaret Rogers, who is also Chair of the Exe Estuary Partnership , said:

"The panels are an exciting part of the work happening around the Exe Estuary to enable people to get closer, to view the wonderful wildlife, riverside villages and landscapes while providing an important means of explaining to visitors how important it is that the Estuary is looked after."

Local Devon County Councillor in Exmouth, Cllr Brenda Taylor, said:

"The new panels are bright, informative and easily accessible to young and older people. They are an excellent addition that will help people enjoy the Trail even more. I am really looking forward to the completion of the entire Trail."
