The Local Government Pension Scheme is one of the oldest public sector schemes in operation, having been established in 1922. The LGPS is managed by an administering authority in accordance with regulations approved by Parliament.

Devon County Council is the administering authority for the Devon Pension Fund. Each authority is responsible for its own fund, into which all contributions are paid. The members’ benefits are paid from this dedicated pension fund.

Devon County Council administers the Pension Fund for its own employees and some 120 other organisations including Unitary, District, Town and Parish Councils, Education establishments and other admitted bodies.

The LGPS is a statutory, funded final salary pension scheme; contracted-out of the State Second Pension (S2P). This means it must, in general, provide benefits at least as good as most members would have received had they been a member of S2P.
