September – You Are What You Read

Who am I? Where am I? Who are they and what are they doing?

Yes, the essential questions of life – and where better to explore and celebrate cultural, personal and local identities than your local library. We have rich resources for local and family historians. Browse our books and images and take advantage of our online subscription services such as Ancestry Library Edition.

For those of you with an interest in cinematographic history Totnes Library is hosting Movie Memories – Screen Life in Totnes - an exhibition of voices and images showing the history of cinematographic venues in Totnes. Drop into the former Romany Cinema which is now Totnes Library on September 5th (morning only), 8,9,10,12 and 13th (morning only) – admission is free.

Totnes Library is also the place to go on September 10th to find out about Devon’s Green lanes. Valerie Belsey is the author of several books on the subject and a noted expert on Highway History. She will take you on a journey of discovery, beginning at the library and will show how local history resources can provide some of the answers before taking the audience for an interesting and enjoyable walk along a local Green Lane. Tickets cost £3 and are available from Totnes Library.

Okehampton Library is the venue for a talk entitled Life Before the Lake. Jo Simpson, Heritage Officer for the Roadford Trust will be giving an illustrated talk on September 3rd, about life in the Roadford Lake area in the 30s, 40s and 50s. Much of the fascinating material has been taken from oral histories provided by local people and collected by Lifton Local History Society. Tickets, priced £2 - to include refreshments, are available from the library.

There is a treat in store for lovers of crime fiction at Barnstaple Library on the 10th September, when BBC Spotlight’s crime reporter Simon Hall will be giving a talk about his life as a crime reporter and author of top flight crime fiction. Tickets are priced at £2 and available from the library.
