Newport Life and Cycle

Newport Life and Cycle is a community environmental project that will transform and regenerate over a corridor of public green space that serves as a cycle way and footpath through Newport in Barnstaple.

Using a creative approach, the project will deliver a valuable community resource for people living, working and visiting Barnstaple. Details of what the project will include can be found under ‘project development’.

The project is being delivered by Devon County Council in partnership with a number of local and regional partners including, North Devon Council, the Environment Agency, Northern Devon Coast & Countryside Service, Devon and Cornwall Police, Newport Primary School, Lampard Community School and Park Community School.

The project manager is Lisa Harty and project artist/designer is Nick Meech www.nickmeechdesign.com.

Funding for the project has come from Devon County Council, Sustrans Links to Schools Fund and Sanctuary Shaftesbury Housing.

The project will be delivered in 3 phases over a period of 18 months until spring/summer 2011. Phase 1 will concentrate on the area adjacent to Lampard Community School and St Johns Lane, running up to Newport Primary School. Phase 2 will focus on the cycle path from Newport Primary School up to Park Community School and the final phase will concentrate on the stretch that runs up to Hollowtree Road and the area at Portmarsh. Up to date information on what is taking place and when can be found under ‘current news’.

This project has been designed in response to significant community consultation and we plan to involve local people in elements of the project as it progresses. We are looking for people to get involved in a Community Working Group.
