Latest News 11 May 2012 We're on the move! The library at Teign House will close from 5.00pm on Friday 8th June and will re-open at the Passmore Edwards Centre at 9.30am on Monday 25th June. Extra items can be borrowed to tide you over while we are closed. Current Adult & Community Learning courses will continue at Teign House until the end of July, with the exception of ICT courses which will run at the Passmore Edwards Centre from Monday 25th June. We look forward to seeing you in the new Centre but if you can't wait until then, come along to the community preview on Saturday 23rd June 2.00 - 5.00pm. 9 May 2012 Young people from Newton Abbot have been busy choosing books for the new library in the Passmore Edwards Centre. With a budget of £1,400 the group of keen readers from Newton Abbot College and Coombeshead Academy spent a morning in Waterstones picking books to stock the new dedicated teenage section of the library. The group selected a good range of authors and genres, with popular choices including Robert Muchamore, Anthony Horowitz, Michael Morpurgo and Darren Shan. The books will be marked with a special sticker on the front cover, so those borrowing the books will know they were specially chosen by young people. Newton Abbot College student Jay Fawcett said: “This was a brilliant opportunity and I am glad I had the chance to really influence what others will be reading.” Later in the day, the students had the chance to go ‘behind the scenes’, and take a look at the how the extensive redevelopment work is progressing at the Passmore Edwards Centre. The group were given a unique tour of the building by Project Manager Anna Matthews, who was able to show them where the new teenage library will be located when the Centre opens in June. Josh Ballard, a year 7 student at Newton Abbot college, said: “It was amazing to see the new library as it neared its completion, as not many people will have the chance to see this. I am looking forward to going back and seeing it when it’s finished.”
29 March 2012 A date for your diary! We are pleased to announce that the Passmore Edwards Centre will open on Monday 25th June after 18 months of refurbishment. During the course of the project, we have faced a number of setbacks that were impossible to predict due to the age of the building and these caused a considerable amount of extra work, affecting the schedule. However, contractors Morgan Sindall have worked hard to try to make up lost time and all of the structural work is now complete. Staff who will be working at the Passmore Edwards Centre visited the site this week and were impressed with the transformation. We are sure that, come the opening, you will also be pleased with the result and that the Centre will be a great boost for Newton Abbot. We will be holding a series of events to celebrate the opening and showcase the services and facilities on offer. We would love you to be involved in the celebration and invite you to attend a drop-in session on Wednesday 4th April where you can put forward ideas for events, offer to run your own event or volunteer to help with the launch in other ways. Please see further details below. 23 March 2012 We want to invite you to get involved in the launch celebrations for the new Passmore Edwards Centre in Newton Abbot when it opens this summer. We are looking for people to come along to a special community drop-in event to share their ideas about the kind of events they would like see in a programme of celebrations for the opening. There will also be the opportunity to volunteer to set up or run an event, or be involved in other ways such as helping show people around the building. The drop-in event will be held on Wednesday 4th April from 10:30am until 12 noon, at the temporary home of the Library and Adult & Community Learning services: Teign House, Kingsteignton Road, Newton Abbot, TQ12 2QG.
