National Standard Course

Devon County Council is now an approved Independent Training Provider which runs courses to teach individuals to be National Standard (Bikeability) Instructors. The Instructor Training Course is the first professional qualification available for individuals to deliver cycle training to this National Standard. Once qualified, training can be given to complete beginners or advanced road cyclists, individuals or groups, adults or children, anywhere in England.
It covers all aspects of cycle training including
- Bike and helmet check and fitting
- Risk assessments
- Child protection awareness training
- The 3 levels of National Standard Cycle Training
- Being an effective instructor
- Giving feedback to trainees
- Being an assertive cyclist
The course includes
4-day taught course - 50% classroom 50% practical
1 Post-Course Assessment. The Post-Course Assessment is included in the cost. This must be competed within 6 months of the training.
Pre-course requirements
All participants must be very competent cyclists and able to cycle in a range of traffic conditions, including heavily trafficked and busy roads. They would preferably have experience of working with groups of adults or children.
Included in the costs
Course manual and workbook, all training materials, administration costs for full accreditation, lunch and refreshments.
What you need to provide
A bicycle and helmet for the duration of the course (this may be able to be stored at venue).
Assessment
All participants will be assessed on their own cycling ability during the course and assessment, in all areas, is carried out on a continuous basis.
All successful participants of the initial 4-day course would receive provisional pass accreditation. Instructors can deliver training as a provisionally accredited instructor for up to 6 months to gain the necessary experience before being finally assessed.

Courses need to have a minimum number of candidates, for reasons of resource and efficiency, to go ahead.
In the event of insufficient numbers candidates, will be offered alternative dates.
The cost of this four day course is £450 (lunch included). However, there are two options for paying this fee:
Option A
Cost of course £450. £300 bursaries are available and can be claimed by Devon County Council Road Safety Team on your behalf. Go to www.ctc.org.uk for more info. Devon Road Safety Team can then sponsor you the remaining £150 for which you are required to deliver at least two courses within the Devon County Council boundary, within 12 months of qualifying as an instructor. Therefore there is no charge for your attendance on this course, however please note that we require at least 3 weeks’ notice if you wish to cancel your place otherwise a £450 charge will be incurred (i.e. the full cost of the course).
Option B
Cost of course £450. £300 bursaries are available and can be claimed by Devon County Council Road Safety Team on your behalf. Go to www.ctc.org.uk for more info. You pay the remaining £150 and there are no obligations to undertake training for us. Please note that we require at least 3 weeks’ notice if you wish to cancel your place otherwise a £450 charge will be incurred (i.e. the full cost of the course).
