The direction post illustrated above is situated at a cross roads near Bicton. The pillar is made of brick with stone table and mouldings. Quotations apposite to travel have been inset into each side, together with place directions. They read as follows:
"To Woodbury, Topsham, Exeter.- Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. The Rolle Obelisk can be seen in the distance. It was erected in 1730, just outside the park. It has no inscription, and its sole function appears to have been to enhance the landscape. This information has been put together from a variety of sources as no contemporary references to the subject matter of the illustration have been found. |
