Cooke, G. A. A topographical and statistical description of thecCounty of Devon. London: Sherwood & Co., c.1830. p. 189. The Royal Hotel and Theatre were commenced in 1811, and finished within two years: the whole north front is 275 feet in length, having in the centre a magnificent portico of eight ionic columns, extending seventy-five feet. The portico in the east elevation is fifty-nine feet wide. The theatre, occupying the western division of the building, is a noble edifice, and is generally open four months during the summer. THE ATHENAEUM, A beautiful structure, including the Plymouth Institution, stands on a spot of ground adjoining the theatre.
