Family and Local History Day at the Westcountry Studies Library

On Saturday 27th October 2007 between 10.00am and 4.00pm the Westcountry Studies Library held a Family and Local History Day. The event was run to make people aware of the Westcountry Studies Library and to introduce new researchers to the facilities offered by the Local Studies Library. Various local organisations were brought together to offer advice on family, house, community and natural history as well as the archaeology of Devon.

Organisations who attended the day were the Devon Record Office, Devon Family History Society, The Devonshire Association, Friends of Devon's Archives, Historic Environment Service, Devon Biodiversity Records Centre and the Devon Register Office (Exeter). A display was also sent by the Portable Antiquities Unit. They were able to provide researchers with a wide spectrum of knowledge on all types of family and local history.

Also on show were the winning books from the 'Devon Book of the Year 2006' as judged by the Devon History Society. Along with local author Todd Gray whose book 'Blackshirts in Devon' won the Professional Category.

The day was a huge success with approximately 250 people attending. The morning was extremely busy and staff was kept occupied answering a variety of questions. Most of the people that attended were interested in family history, and quite a few were requiring information on how to start this type of research. Also popular was research into house history, and researchers were given various suggestions for the type of material that could be used to facilitate this. A quiet period over the lunch time allowed staff to refresh themselves in preparation for a further onslaught in the afternoon. While not as busy as the morning the afternoon saw a steady stream of researchers visiting the library. The event closed at 4.00pm and both researchers and staff commented that it had been a very productive day. Staff at the Westcountry Studies Library would like to thank all the organisations involved in the Family and Local History Day for their enthusiasm, help and participation.

Visitors to the open day were asked to complete a feedback form and those who included their address were entered into a draw for a Selection of facsimile maps of Devon. The winners are,

Family History Fair
Future Inn, Plymouth
Saturday 29th March 2008, 10 am to 4 pm
The Devon and Cornwall family History Societies will be hosting the first Family History Fair to be held in Plymouth. The aim of the event is to attract those just beginning family history as well as the more experienced researchers. An advice desk, beginners' talks and other presentations are planed for the day.
