Dartmoor Society Research Lecture The Dartmoor Society will be holding its inaugural Research Lecture at the University of Plymouth on Wednesday 7th November 2007. The lecture will be given by Dr Ralph Fyfe of the University's Department of Geography, and is entitled 'Climate and Environmental Change on Dartmoor: Lessons from Archaeology and Palaeoecology'. With concerns about the predictions of climate change appearing more and more in the headlines this lecture promises to be an informative examination of the evidence for variations in Dartmoor's weather and plant life over the last 10,000 years. For venue details see 'Diary dates' below. Devon Book of the Year 2006 The results of the 2006 Devon Book of the Year were announced on October 13th 2007. Family and Local History Day at the Westcountry Studies Library The event is aimed at people who are interested in family, local and community history. Whether a complete beginner or a seasoned campaigner The aim of the day is to promote the Westcountry Studies Library and to encourage people who may never have used it to visit the library. We are also offering advice and limited help to people who are interested in starting to research their family, house or their community. We will also be offering advice to people who have already started research, but have encountered problems and are not sure where to go next. As well as staff from the Westcountry Studies Library there will be representatives from the Devon Record Office, Devon Family History Society, Devonshire Association, Friends of Devon's Archives, Historic Environment Service and the Devon Wildlife Trust. Each will be promoting their organisation as well as offering advice on their specific speciality. There will also be displays and material to take away.
