Introduction

The early children's book collections of Devon Library Services contain about 2,000 items mainly dating from before 1940. They were built up over a period of time by bequest, donation and purchase and do not represent any significant individual collection. The titles to 1850 have a detailed listing by the noted children's book historian Marjore Moon (1908-1996) The listing on this page is very much a preliminary guide to the collections as a whole and is based on a series of card indexes which have been converted, often without reference to the original items. It is hoped that further details can be added when time permits.

The material is held in Exeter Central Reference Library and those wishing to consult the collections should enquire in advance. Some items may be too fragile to produce at present. Proof of identity may also be required from those wishing to consult material in this and other special collections.
