Dawlish Warren : early maps

Devon Libraries Local Studies Service     Search | Home page | Local studies contact
The changing shape of the Dawlish Warren sandspit at the mouth of the River Exe is the subject of much study. This page offers a series of smaller scale maps of the area produced between 1698 and 1946. The problems of surveying coastal areas are clearly demonstrated by this sequence and, when using them as evidence for coastal erosion and deposition, it is important to balance the information offered with the varying accuracy in surveying and the different conventions used in depicting tidal and other features.
