Core local studies titles for branch libraries
This listing covers about 500 basic local studies titles which can be widely found in Devon branch libraries. The arrangement is by a simplification of the Dewey Decimal Classification used to arrange books in Devon Library Services. The number after the class mark refers to the tier of libraries in which the book is most likely to be found. Branch libraries in Devon are divided into tiers as follows:

Tier 1. The largest libraries. Only Exeter, Barnstaple and Exmouth fall into this category for local studies purposes.
Tier 2. Libraries in larger towns. There are 12 libraries in this tier.
Tier 3. Libraries in smaller towns which act as a focal point (16 libraries).
Tier 4. Libraries in more local communities (25 libraries).

Details showing which tier each branch is allocated for local studies purposes together with its catchment area can be found in the table of parish pack holdings.

This list is indicative only. Often other titles on the subject may be in stock, or other editions of a title may be held. The location of a particular branch in the county may determine which district, town or village histories and guidebooks are held. For this reason only a small selection of histories of the larger towns is shown on this list.

While this list is used by library staff to assist in stock managment, it is hoped that it may be helpful to make it more widely available to highlight some of the more useful titles among the more than local 50,000 items on the complete catalogue.
