Apprenticed to engraver James Mitan and studied James Heath's engravings. Worked primarily with his younger brother Edward Francis Finden. Plates elaborate and finely finished, at first as book illustrations for other publishers, but also independently. Worked with brother on plates for The Elgin marbles published by the British Museum, also for Lodge's Portraits (1821-34). Independent works included Landscape illustrations to the Bible (1835-36), after J.M.W.Turner and others. The brothers invested profits from such series in the Royal gallery of British art (1838-49), the 48 plates in which were not financially successful. Engraved a number of plates after Landseer. Produced many topographical and architectural plates, mainly in the aquatint manner. Worked on plates for Valentia's Voyages and travels to India, after drawings by the traveller Henry Salt (1780-1827), published 1809. His first major work was Picturesque views of the River Thames, 1810 and he later worked on a number of publications, including Pyne's Royal residences. Died: 8 Feb 1885, Westbourne Terrace, London. A capable amateur artist and a naval officer. He was posted to 'Constance' from the Plymouth marine headquarters in 1848 and was the second in command of the Royal Marines during its voyage to Vancouver Island in 1848, having been promoted to first lieutenant. Several of his sketches of the action around Fort Victoria are now in the archives of British Columbia. He continued in service after the voyage, retiring in 1868 as a major on full pay.
