DESSIOU, J. F., Probably to be identified with Joseph Foss Dessiou (fl.1790-1842) who with Lieut. J.S. Roe was originally appointed in Feb.1828 to commence compiling sailing directions, a project, inaugurated by Perry, which had recently been approved (Royal Society MB 1 154). Dessiou made a 20th edition of John Hamilton Moore (1738-1807), The New Practical Navigator and Daily Assistant, in 1828. (Institute of Navigation Journal No 30 p 323 1977). He wrote 62 tidal letters, mostly to Lubbock and Whewell and received 7. In 1831 Mr Lubbock and Mr Dessiou began analysing tidal height records, which had been kept at the London Docks since 1795. They determined a relationship between the position of the moon and the tides using established, respectable and non-secretive methods. So it was that in 1833 the British Admiralty published the first set of Tide Tables. DIBDIN, Charles. Dibdin, Charles. Dramatist, actor and songwriter. Born: at Southampton on or before 4 Mar 1745, son of a silversmith. Died: 25 July 1814, Camden Town. Singing actor at Covent Garden. On 21 May 1762 his first work, an operetta entitled The Shepherds Artifice, with words and music by himself, was produced at this theatre. In 1782 he became joint manager of the Royal circus, afterwards known as the Surrey theatre. In 1787-8 he undertook a tour through many towns of England giving entertainments, an account of which was published in 1788 as his Musical tour. In 1788 he sailed for the East Indies, but the vessel having put in to Torbay in a storm, he changed his mind and returned to London. A series of entertainments brought his songs, music and recitations more prominently into notice, and permanently established his fame as a lyric poet. It was at these entertainments that he first introduced many of his sea-songs. His Observations on a tour through almost the whole of England was published with plates after his own paintings in two volumes in 1801. In 1803 Dibdin was rewarded by government with a pension of £200 a year. Imprints: Somers Cocks sources: S.27
