Friends of Devon Libraries
Friends Groups work together with Libraries Unlimited, the independent staff and community owned social enterprise which runs Devon Libraries, to ensure communities benefit from high quality library services.
What do Friends Groups do?
The majority of our libraries have a Friends Group who work closely with their local Library Supervisor to:
- Support and promote their local library and the services it offers
- Help to raise money and hold events and activities for people of all ages
- Enhance their local library by providing practical and financial assistance
- Represent and engage with their local community
Friends Groups are open to any library member who wants to get involved and support their library. If you are interested in joining a local Friends’ Group or would like to discuss the possibility of starting one locally, please visit your local library and talk to the Library Supervisor.
Membership of Libraries Unlimited
Libraries Unlimited is an independent staff and community owned social enterprise, established in April 2016 with the support of Devon County Council.
Libraries Unlimited runs Devon Libraries – Devon County Council’s public library service which has 50 libraries across the county, plus 4 mobile and 3 prison libraries. It is a company limited by guarantee with charitable status.
Membership of Libraries Unlimited gives Friends Groups an opportunity to influence how their local library and the organisation as a whole are run. All Friends Groups are entitled to be members of Libraries Unlimited. As members of Libraries Unlimited they may put forward one of their members to stand for election as a Community Trustee on the Libraries Unlimited Board. They also have one vote in the election of a Community Trustee and may send a representative, with voting rights, to General Meetings.
