Barnstaple Local Studies Library is part of the North Devon Local Studies Centre and is situated on the second floor of the North Devon Library and Record Office building in Barnstaple.
We welcome local and family history enquiries by phone or e-mail and personal visitors from across the world.
Many of our customers are from Australia, America and South Wales, tracing their ancestry back to North Devon, or were World War II evacuees, and want to revisit their childhood haunts.
However you do not have to have North Devon family connections to benefit from our help and expert guidance.
Devon Libraries subscribe to the Ancestry online family history website which includes Census records from 1841-1911 and birth, marriage and death indexes for the whole of England and Wales, as well as certain London parish and Poor Law records, US passenger lists, Australian transportation registers, and World War I service and medal records.
Devon Library members can use the Ancestry online family history website FREE for half an hour a day in ANY Devon library but for an HOUR a day at our Local Studies Centre.
You can drop in to see us at any time during opening hours, or contact us by phone or e-mail for your local and family history enquiries, for advice or to book resources for your visit.
You can also use the findmypast family history website FREE in our Local Studies Centre at Barnstaple and at Devon Record Office at Sowton, Exeter.
Sessions are restricted to an hour a day for visitors to the Centre and are for private use only ie commercial or third party access is NOT permissible under terms of the licence agreement. No advance bookings can be made via telephone or e-mail.
