Changes to Primary Salting Network Winter 2011/12

In order to ensure we are providing value for money, we have reviewed the primary salting road network.  The primary network means roads which are salted when road temperatures drop and ice is expected.

A number of roads in Devon have been found not to meet the criteria for the primary salting network, and will no longer be treated as part of it.  However, these roads (listed below) will still be treated as part of the secondary salting network; that is roads which are treated when more severe winter weather – such as snow - is expected.

This represents some 128km removed from the primary salting network. However 37km has also been added to the primary salting network including roads to all railway stations and secondary schools (including independent schools), and other roads which now meet the criteria including from Brixton (C4) and Yealmpton (C143) to the A38, Kingskerswell (Old Newton Road) to Bulleigh Barton and onto Ipplepen and Marldon.

It should be noted that the primary and secondary salting routes combined are now approximately 37km longer than last year.
