The travel trainers hold the accredited travel trainers qualification from the Bradford Travel Training Unit. They also have extensive experience of working with young people who have special educational needs. | |
Karen Hegarty Karen worked as a carer at the West of England School for Children with Little or No Sight before moving on to be a warden in a hostel for homeless teenagers. Since qualifying as a secondary school teacher in 1990, she has worked in mainstream education and gained experience with special needs students with a wide range of difficulties including physical, sensory, emotional and behavioural. Karen has a particular interest in learning difficulties and autistic spectrum disorders. In 2000 Karen set up a youth group called Socops, this was for children on the autistic spectrum. Socops was recently chosen by Sainsbury’s as their charity of the month. Karen has worked as an Independent Travel Trainer since 2008, undertaking additional training in risk management and dealing with challenging behaviour. She is also a qualified First Aider. Spencer Nasey Spencer has been an Independent Travel Trainer since October 2009. He is responsible for training students within the Barnstaple and North Devon region. Spencer trained as a mainstream secondary school teacher specialising in Physical Education and Geography. Spencer further specialised teaching students with special educational needs in a local college of further education. Spencer taught PE and Outdoor Education across a variety of courses and gained experience with a wide range of students with different learning and physical difficulties and behavioural issues. Spencer has also gained much experience in assessing risk and implementing controls to minimize these risks in an outdoor and changing environment, as he managed his own adventurous activity licensing authority approved outdoor pursuits business called Surfseekers. This breadth of experience has given him the knowledge required when working with the variety of students recommended for Independent Travel Training.
