What is Fare Car?

Fare Car is a shared public transport service operated by Private Hire cars. This enables passengers to book and pay separately but share the advertised timetabled journeys. The fare charged is approximately equal to or slightly above the normal bus fare for the distance travelled. Fare Car is not a subsidised individual taxi service for people to use whenever and wherever they wish.

Fare Car is operated by local taxi operators by formal agreement with Devon County Council.

Who can use Fare car?

Fare Car is available to passengers of all ages, regardless of whether or not they live in the area it operates.

How do I use Fare Car?

To use Fare Car you need to book in advance, normally the day before at the latest.

Where can I travel to?

There are twelve Fare Car schemes in selected areas of Devon. To find out where your nearest scheme is, or to obtain contact details, please select Fare Car schemes in Devon.

Each scheme covers a designated rural area and serves specific points in the nearest main town e.g. supermarket, hospital, leisure centre. Fare Car schemes offer several journey opportunities per day, normally 6 days a week (excluding public holidays).

What's new?

On 19th August 2009, the new F17 service, the first wheelchair accessible Fare Car in Devon, was launched. The service, which runs into and from Kingsbridge on Wednesdays and Fridays, enables passengers to travel in either a wheelchair or a standard car seat. However, anyone can use the service. Fare Car is a public transport scheme offering innovative public transport to rural areas. Now that the Government's Rural Bus Challenge funding has ended, it is funded solely through Devon County Council's public transport budget.
