Bus Stops and Shelters

Bus stops

As a highway authority, the County Council works with bus companies in designating and marking bus stops in positions, which take into account considerations of road safety, bus operations and the convenience of passengers. However, the Council does not have complete control over where bus companies choose to stop to pick up and set down passengers. Many bus services run on a "hail and ride" basis and many bus stops, particularly in rural areas, are not necessarily marked or signed.

Requests for new shelters

Devon County Council offers advice concerning the positioning and maintenance of bus shelters and new funding through the Local Transport Plan has enabled us to embark upon a programme of improvements. Request and comments from Town and Parish Councils or members of the public are invited and should be directed to devonbus@devon.gov.uk. There are a number of specialist advertising firms who provide shelters in return for the right to display advertising material on them but these firms are normally only willing to consider urban areas.

Reporting a damaged bus shelter

The County Council does not normally take responsibility for shelter maintenance. This normally rests with the Town, Parish or District Council. However the Council holds records of most of the bus shelters in the Devon County Council area and may be able to provide you with the correct contact.
