Devon Car Free Day

How to support Devon Car Free Day

For workplaces, Devon Car Free Day is a great way to promote the transport options available to staff and provides the incentive to give walking, cycling, public transport or car sharing a go. Staff may discover how easily they could fit a ‘car free day’ into their normal working week, helping organisations in Devon to manage their car parking pressures and reduce the traffic on our roads.

CarshareDevon

It may not be possible for everyone to leave their cars at home on 22nd September but car sharing offers an option to reduce the number of cars on our roads. By finding car share partners through www.carsharedevon.com your staff can save themselves money and help do their bit to make Devon even greener.

Display posters to encourage your friends and colleagues to try a new mode of travel on September 22nd. There are two versions of the poster - one includes space for you to write details of your own events.

Employers who encourage staff to take part can apply for a small amount of match funding. The purpose of the match funding is to support you in running events / initiatives to encourage your staff to try travelling to work sustainably.

Please let us know what you’re doing to support Devon Car Free Day!

Register your event to be included in our press coverage and also to apply for match funding (deadline Tuesday 13th Sept).

Things your organisation could do to support Devon Car Free Day include:

  • offer a free breakfast to anyone who travels sustainably on Sept 22nd;
  • offer prizes for the 'most creative traveller' or 'best team effort';
  • set up a reward scheme or loyalty card system for regular 'green travellers' (for example, collect stamps to earn credit for the staff canteen);
  • purchase taster tickets for bus or train routes and offer them to staff for free for their travel on Sept 22nd;
  • hire a cycling instructor to run a ‘bike bus’ from popular areas to lead people into work on their bikes;
  • offer discounted cycle training to any staff who would like to cycle on Car Free Day but lack confidence;
  • hold a green travel information stand the week before, to encourage staff to find out how they can travel on the 22nd;
  • offer staff incentives to be ‘travel buddies’, to help colleagues make sustainable journeys;
  • purchase an annual bus or train ticket for staff to use for business travel;
  • produce a green travel information newsletter, with information on how to travel to your site using sustainable transport.

Residents of Barnstaple, Bideford and Braunton have the opportunity to support the day on two wheels. Find out more at www.westcountrycycletraining.co.uk/whatson.
