Getting Started

8 Easy Steps To develop your School Travel Plan

  • Start with a survey and consultation. You could design your own, use our GIS system or customised extra large free maps with spotty stickers to locate where pupils live and how they travel.Contact the School Travel Plan team for advice and assistance
  • Form a school travel working group or Travel Action Group (TAG) to look at some of the issues. The group can consist of pupils, staff, governors and parents.
  • Decide on the aims of your School Travel Plan. The most important thing is that it should help to reduce the numbers of car journeys that are used to get to school.
  • Identify the issues, needs and problems for your school:They will be to do with safety, the environment and health. Be precise about what and where problems exist for each mode of transport.
  • Discuss and identify some solutions. Do this in consultation with pupils, staff, parents, governors and your Road Safety Officer - ideas in School Travel Plan Guide Part II. Some of the people listed in our 'Who can help?' section will also be helpful. Include awareness raising and curriculum opportunities for pupils. Use this form to ask for help with engineering works.
  • Set targets - Make them achievable, measurable and timed. Set some short-term targets and then some year 2 and 3 longer term targets.
  • Action planning - Decide WHAT ACTIONS are needed, WHO will implement the actions and by WHEN. Link your School Travel Plan to your School Improvement Plan.
  • Publicise, Monitor and Review - Publish & publicise your School Travel Plan then decide how and when monitoring will take place and by whom. Plan when you will do your surveys again to see the progress you have made towards your targets.
