Newport Life and Cycle

Project Development

Concept design stage 2007/2008

Following a recruitment process carried out in summer 2007 the Project Steering Committee appointed project artist/designer, Nick Meech, to work on the 1st stage of the project; the consultation and concept design stage. Over the next year Nick engaged with the community and local stakeholders, consulting with users of the path, the local schools, businesses and older residents’ homes.  Two public meetings were organised to gather comments and thoughts from local residents. In response to this initial consultation Nick developed concept designs for the project including the creation of wildlife corridors, seating, lighting, interpretation initiatives, and signage.

Project with Park Community School Summer 2008

As part of the ongoing development of the project artist/designer Nick Meech collaborated with students from Park Community School to create a short film that explored the life cycle of dragonflies whilst commenting on aspects of young peoples’ behaviour, specifically in the context of the cycle path.

The students from Park School got involved in filming, acting, directing, creating storyboards, costumes & makeup and managing other aspects of filming such as putting together the credits etc. The soundtrack for the film was composed by the band, ‘Mongo lounge’ from Sweden and additional technical & editing support came from guys at the Rainbow Collective http://www.rainbowcollective.co.uk.

The film, once completed appeared on You Tube and was also shown at The Dragonfly Festival in Sweden http://www.dragonflyfestival.org. The film was very much about feeding into the wider Newport Life and Cycle project, and the interpretation strategy for the project, especially around the Portmarsh area and celebrating the project with temporary elements that fired young peoples’ imagination.

Desperate Men came to Newport  August 2008

As part of the ongoing development of the project the Steering Committee held a ‘spectacular’ event along the path in August 2008. If you had ventured down to the path you would have been forgiven to think your eyes were playing tricks on you as what appeared to be moving litter bins accompanied by a wacky film crew moved along the path…………

Desperate Men, a professional street theatre company based in Bristol took over the Newport Cycle Path for the day with their crazy ‘rubbish heads’ and wacky ‘film crew’, clearing litter, provoking debate and gathering stories from users of the path. www.desperatemen.com
