On-road sections

  • Plymouth to Totnes (NCN route 2) 20miles / 32kms
A fully signed (NCN2) mainly on road route suitable for commuting and utility cycling to market towns. From Plymouth (Deep Lane, A38 flyover) the route parallels the A38 trunk road through Lee Mill, Ivybridge and South Brent. It then branches south via the village of Rattery to Dartington and Totnes. The whole route is on relatively lightly trafficked roads or minor lanes with some short traffic free sections.
The sections between Plymouth and Ivybridge are level ,whilst the section from Ivybridge to South Brent has a steep hill in Bittaford heading east and slighter gradient heading west. Between South Brent and Dartington you can expect typical south Devon terrain but more level cycling than you might expect.
  • Totnes (Ashprington) to East Portlemouth  (NCN route 2)  x miles / x kms
At the end of the traffic free Sharpham Drive (from Totnes) at Asprington the fully signed (NCN2) route to East Portlemouth (Salcombe) via Blackawton is along quiet often narrow lanes. The initial section via Tuckenhay takes runs along the edge of the very attractive estuary Dart estuary before heading southwest towards Slapton. This includes some challenging hill sections which offer great countryside and views. There are shops and facilities at Blackawton and Chillington along the way and a passenger ferry which carries cycles between East Portlemouth and Salcombe.
  • Salcombe to Plymouth (NCN2)
[This section is under development and as yet is not open or signed. If you wish to cycle this section of NCN2 please see the proposed route map and or contact Devon County Council for details  - environment@devon.gov.uk
