The Expert Driver Course

A driving landmark

Have you ever considered taking an advanced driving test? If so, this may be the course for you.

For any driver wishing to enhance their existing skills or prepare for an advanced driving test, Devon Drivers’ Centre offers the Expert Driver Course.

The Expert Driver course
A day of intensive training in your own vehicle, if preferred, covering all types of road and traffic conditions. Under the guidance of one of our highly-qualified instructors, you will learn the finer points of advanced driving.

Training is based on ‘Roadcraft, The Essential Police Drivers’ Manual’ and, of course, ‘The Highway Code’. Subjects covered during the day include: using a systematic, planned approach to driving; effective observation techniques; positioning; dealing with corners and bends; overtaking; making and maximising safe progress. You will also be introduced to the “art” of commentary; one of the skills in the advanced driver’s repertoire.

The actual day can comprise either 6 hours of on-road training or 5 hours on road and a one hour session in the Centre’s Skid Car.

Isn’t advanced driving the exclusive province of a gifted few? Not at all. “Advanced” driving is the application of safe, defensive driving techniques, coupled with a high level of concentration on the driving task, and a consistent and systematic driving style; an approach that, with dedication, can be a natural progression from the first day of sitting behind the wheel of a car.

More information about advanced driving tests may be found at the websites of the Institute of Advanced Motorists and the RoSPA Advanced Drivers' Association.
