A unique challenge
Adverse road and weather conditions are often credited with being the cause of a vehicle losing control and skidding. Underpinning this, however, are the driver’s actions at the time. When such conditions affect this normally temperate area, driving on all roads, and especially those that may be untreated, can present a real challenge.
The Advanced Skid Prevention and Control Course offers a solution to drivers who wish to hone their skills when driving in adverse road and weather conditions. Taking place in the more realistic environment of the Devon Drivers’ Centre Practice Road Circuit, the prime objective is to complete the course with minimal losses of control. Virtually throughout the entire course, the Skid Car is set up to replicate very slippery conditions.

Available to any driver who has attended the standard course, this module runs for three hours and is available for two participants at a time. Following a short safety briefing, participants are given a demonstration drive by a top-flight instructor. Participants will then revise some of the subject matter covered in the standard course, and work through a number of exercises designed to enhance awareness of the importance of preventing skids. The course culminates in a timed skill-drive that looks not only at participants’ abilities to prevent skids, but also at their driving styles.
