Driving Safer For Longer

Practical advice

Planning

Planning your journey is one of the most important parts of keeping you driving safer for longer. Consider the time of day the weather the route you are taking before setting out. if you are planning a long journey on unfamilier roads, consider breaking the journey up in to managable pieces, take regular breaks maybe a stop over somewhere.

Ensure that the windscreen and door mirrors are clean and that all mirrors are properly adjusted.

Ensure that you give clear and timely signals before moving into traffic and only move off when it is safe to do so.

Rush Hour

Don’t damage your driving ability or confidence by trying to battle through busy traffic when you could plan your journey around busy areas at peak times.

Road Junctions

Recent data suggests that junctions can cause a major problem for the older driver especially when the driver has to set off from a complete stop or has to turn into or across a major road.

It would be impossible to avoid junctions but by being aware of possible problems enables you to take extra care.

Sunrise Sunset

Driving can also become difficult when the sun is low in the sky and the intense glare at such a low angle becomes almost blinding. By changing your route or time of travel you can avoid these situations.

Night driving/ dark days

At age 60 the average person will need three times as much light to see an object as they did at age 20. When starting allow your eyes a couple of minutes to adjust to the dark.
