Millions of people enjoy the freedom, fun and improved health that cycling can bring. Fit2Ride is a “step by step” guide which shows all members of the family how they can become able and safe cyclists - regardless of their age or initial cycling ability. The guide is split into two sections.
Zone 1
For beginners or people who don’t feel confident when they are cycling.
At first, it is important to have lots of practise in a safe area, off the road. This will enable you to develop knowledge of how your bicycle works, basic bicycle handling skills and how you can help to keep yourself safe once you start using the roads.
Zone 2
For cyclists who have achieved a good standard of cycling knowledge and skills, off the road.
When you have developed confidence, good observation, bicycle handling skills, you may wish to travel on quiet roads. This is when you will become part of the traffic and must follow all traffic rules, traffic signs and signals. You will also need to be considerate towards other road users including walkers, young children, the elderly and people with disabilities.
