Downward trend in road fatalities continues in 2004.

For a commentary on casualty figures in 2004 read our January 2005 press notice.

Provisional figures from the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary database of recorded collisions illustrates that in Devon in 2003:

There were 35 crashes in which at least one person was killed
There were 282 crashes in which at least one person was seriously injured
There were 2148 crashes in which at least one person was slightly injured

Fatal Collisions Report by month since 1992

Counting the injuries rather than the crashes, the same data suggests that:

36 people were killed
327 people were seriously injured
2825 people were slightly injured.

Devon has signed up to national targets in terms of reducing the casualty toll on our roads.   In particular, by the year 2010 we aim to:

Reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured by 40%
Reduce the number of children killed or seriously injured by 50%
Reduce the rate (relative to traffic levels) at which people are slightly injured by 10%

Relative to the number of people injured between 1994 and 1998.

Devon appears to be succeeding in reducing the number of casualties in accordance with these targets.   The number of people killed and seriously injured in Devon in 2003 is half the casualty toll reported in 1991.

However, there is no room for complacency, and every effort will be taken to reduce the toll of death and serious injury even further.
