Bideford Longbridge

Last changes - 1925

Image of bridge in 1925

The last widening of the bridge was completed in 1925 and gave an increased road width of 4.88m (16'-0") and pavements either side of 2.13m (7'-0"). reinforced concrete cantilevers resting on the tops of the cutwaters were anchored down to the centre of the piers.  On the outer edge of these cantilevers spanning between piers are reinforced concrete beams carrying a parapet built in random stonework.  Similar beams were placed against the face of the semi-circular arches and the two joined with a reinforced concrete slab.  During this work the cutwaters were also rebuilt.
