There has been a bridge crossing of the River Torridge at this site since the 13th century providing a vital link between communities either side of the river.
Bideford Longbridge is a 24-span medieval masonry arch bridge which has gone through several changes throughout its life. It is now in need of strengthening to keep it available and safe for everyone who wants to use it.
Following the extensive consultation carried out by Devon County Council (DCC) in March 2006 concerning options for strengthening Bideford Longbridge a decision was made at the meeting of the executive of DCC on 19th June 2006. At this meeting it was resolved that approval be given to the design and construction of Option 1 as the solution to securing the long term safety of Bideford Longbridge. Option 1 involves the removal of the weak parts of the structure and their replacement to strengthen the bridge while retaining the existing appearance. It is intended to commence work on the scheme in 2007 with completion in 2009.
