Definitive Map Review

Parish of South Huish

The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 requires the County Council to keep the Definitive Map of public rights of way under continuous review and to make modifications where it appears that routes should be added, regraded or deleted.  A review is currently being undertaken in the Parish of South Huish.

Suggestions have been made to modify the Definitive Map for South Huish in respect of:

Route 1: Claimed addition of a footpath from Lower Road to Higher Road in Galmpton, adjacent to the properties Charnwood and Mariners.

Route 2: Claimed addition of a footpath from Weymouth Park to Footpath No. 11, South Huish, between the properties Woolmancliffe and Lantern Lodge Hotel.

Route 3: Claimed addition of a footpath from the main road at Outer Hope, adjacent to the property Blue Bay, to Footpath No. 11, South Huish, between the properties Sea Garden and Drake House.

Route 4: Claimed upgrading of Footpath Nos. 10, 11 (part) and 12, South Huish to public bridleway, between Outer Hope and Thurlestone Sands along the coast path and along Beacon Lane.

Route 5: Claimed addition of a footpath from main road at Inner Hope, opposite Hope Beach House, via Coastguard Cottages to main road adjacent to Spray Cottage.

Route 6: Claimed addition of a footpath from Footpath No. 20, South Huish, adjacent to the slipway, and around the rear of the Old Lifeboat Station to main road at Inner Hope.

Routes 5 & 6 Map

The Definitive Map is the legal record of public rights of way. There are four categories:

  • Footpath - a highway over which the public have a right of way on foot only.

  • Bridleway - a highway over which the public have a right of way on foot, horseback, leading a horse or on a bicycle.

  • Restricted byway – a highway over which the public have a right of way on foot, horseback, leading a horse, or with a non-mechanically propelled vehicle.

  • Byway open to all traffic - a highway over which the public have a right of way with all traffic but which is mainly used as a footpath or bridleway.

Maps showing the existing public rights of way, and suggestions to modify the Definitive Map, are available for inspection at the Area South Office, Devon House, Brunel Road, Newton Abbot (during office hours) on 0845 155 1004, and on request to the Clerk to South Huish Parish Council, and during office hours at the Public Rights of Way Section, Lucombe House, County Hall, Exeter on 01392 382602.
